Washington (CNN) – Some 200 service men and women stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany were greeted by a surprise server at a Veterans Day meal Thursday – first lady Michelle Obama.
"We are so grateful to all of you," she told the troops and their families. "Not just our service men and women, but their kids, wives, husbands and parents."
Mrs. Obama talked with the troops as she helped serve a meal of steaks, mashed potatoes and gravy, peas, corn on the cob, garlic bread and lemon meringue pie. She worked the room giving out hand shakes, hugs and chatted with troops and their families after she was finished serving.
The first lady also visited wounded troops recovering at nearby Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.
Obama also met with her German counterpart Bettina Wulff, during her brief time in Germany. She made the stop as she headed home ahead of her husband from a trip to Asia.
